[OT] BT Woes

I reckon this is one Mr Doxey might be able to answer!

A month back, our phone stopped working - incoming calls gave the
caller a ring-tone, but nothing our end. Outgoing calls gave a "the
number dialled has not been recognised" message after dialling two
digits. It transpired that Mr BT has inadvertantly connected our
line to a different number at the exchange. It took a while to find,
because the automatic tests (logically enough as I guess it was a
line connected to nothing that was being tested) suggested that the
fault was in or near our property.

The guy eventually found the problem by connecting to our line (at
the house). He asked "are you sure there's only one line here"
and
when we said yes, he said "I wonder why it's not your number
then"
and toddled off to the exchange).

Just before Christmas it happened again - and we were out of the
country trying to use Broadband to access the kit back at the house.
Five days to fix this time!

>From memory, there used to be a number you could dial which would
tell you your own phone number (yes, I would usually know it, but not
when BT engages in a bit of impromptu knitting). I feel this would
be useful information to have at-hand if the problem ever recurs.

Again from memory, it used to be either 177 or 17070, but neither of
them seems to work for me!

Clues welcome.

Thanks,

Nick
