If your number is automatically withheld, you need to dial the release
code
(1470 ?) before the 17070, otherwise it won't give you the number.

Frequently use it, never found a (BT) exchange that it doesn't work on.

17070 works on a BT line, and it's really not scary!  It tells you your
number first (which is how you can check line identification), and pressing
'1' for the ring back test, rings you back to check that.  You don't get a
real person!
