Can't reply to all your questions, but I can strongly recommend the
Sharp Aquos 26" LCD TV we ended up with.  I also had a similar
experience with SWMBO surprisingly offering us a new TV out of the blue.

We ended up with the Aquos for aesthetic reasons, as we wanted a black
screen surround and the speakers mounted below the screen to make the tv
seem less wide.  It did however have the best picure from the ones on
display in Currys, and I managed to instigate my "I'm not buying it
here
until I've seen what I can buy it for on the web" rule.  Which saved
us
£700 pounds.

We also got a free three year warranty from Sharp which may not be
available any more.

I currently have a video, dvd player, ps1 and a media pc connected to it
all the time, the video and ps1 via scart, the dvd via component and the
media pc via DVI. (I think the newer ones have a standard VGA connector
now as well.)  It has a nice feature that allow me to rename the items
on the select input menu, so instead of them being labelled input 1,
input 2, input 3 etc, they are now labelled as Video, DVD, PS1 and PVR.
I also use the serial port to switch the tv automatically to and from
the media pc input when the pvr software is turned on and off.

It also adjusts the screen brightness in relation to ambient light,
which is v handy in summer as the tv is close to a large window, but is
still watchable with sun across the screen.

No idea about HD, it wasn't even talked about when I bought mine.  As
I'm not a Sky user, I doubt I will be needing HD for a while anyway.
