Depends on the risk I suppose, most lighting controls I've dealt with have
no graceful failure - if the thing crashes then the lights can do almost
anything! If it's a hardware failure then again it could fail on or off. In
terms of programmable BMS systems then it is most unlikely that there is
graceful shutdown unless it has been specifically coded by a competent
commissioning engineer - the basic firmware has no way of knowing what
application it will be installed for or what strategies will be loaded.
With
the pre-programmed systems it is more likely to have protection against
certain kinds of failure but again this usually depends on the risks
involved and the applications being controlled.

C-Bus, surely, must have good failure strategies built-in, to ensure
graceful degradation in case of failures ... I'm beginning to wonder !
