Martin. The Vauxhall Cavalier had just such a system on it's electric
windows from the mid 1980s until mid 1990s - think Astra did as well. It
sensed an obstruction and reversed windows by about an inch - there was
also
an override button for use if the windows had lots of ice on them. I pulled
one apart a while ago and it looks to be a simple box in front of the motor
that controls it - relay size and 12v of course.

Not got any further with it yet - it is one of the projects on the list -
but traditional scrapyards (there are a few still around) normally have
lots
of mk3 Cavaliers.
