I've got the Orange equivalent, which has the same battery arrangement.
The main battery powers the unit, and the backup retains 'permanent'
information in case the main battery dies or is taken out - the user
profile, synchronisation information, date/time, and possibly contacts
and calendar information - similar to the battery in a PC.  When the
unit is recharged, both batteries are charged, so if the main one says
100% and the backup says 0% there's almost certainly something amiss
unless he's switched to a fresh main battery instead of recharging? If a
full recharge doesn't retrieve it, then its back to the shop for a
replacement, I don't believe the backup batteries are user accessible
