remote control cctv

Hi all

I'm not sure this is the right group for discussing this, if not please
excuse..

I'm struggling through my first steps in home automation, which in this
case is more a case of remote control for now.

I've fitted a remote control stand alone cctv dvr at my home, its an
x-vision tdvr-4. It works well in so much as my recorded video and
motion detect etc.. is fine but the remote access via ADSL is completely
useless. It does exactly what its supposed to do but every few sessions
it locks up, the failure is either it locks in permanent record or
permanent playback or stops steaming video or etc.. etc..

I never lose some form of connectivity to the dvr, I can always recover
activity logs etc but basic functionality is always lost after a day or
so. I suspect the problem is with the remote client, but whatever it is
so unreliable that I'm beginning to lose hope.

At this stage I'm going to assign a couple of ports on my netiom board
to take the power off the unit and hopefully allow me to re start the
scheduled recording by hacking the wires to the start button.

Is this typical of the "entry level" dvrs ?

Are any 3rd party clients available for this type of unit or have I
wasted my money?

Any help gratefully received.
