Before you abandon Windows try the uBcore firewire drivers - they may get
around your problem for you. (Have you not yet hit the "Delayed Write
Failure" problem with Windows?)

Nope - I use a Mac Mini for serving ... I don't have it spinning down the
drives when not in use, however, as I unmount and mount the drives whilst
doing admin it does spin them down and back up correctly so probably would
be OK.

I think it reads them but won't write to them...
