Sky wraps up HD service launch package by adding Discovery HD
Sky has just announced that Discovery HD will be part of the initial
package of high definition channels available from the launch of the Sky
HD service. The channel will be a 24-hour offering, too, accompanying the
HD pictures with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.
Apparently the channel will offer exclusive content from Discovery's
worldwide library containing more than 1000 hours of HD programming,
including favourites like Sunrise Earth and Atlas. Intriguingly the
Discovery shows will be broadcast in 1080i rather than the 720p Sky is
intending to use for most of its own HD programmes, so it will be
interesting to look for differences in quality.
The press release revealing the above information still talks of an early
2006 launch for the Sky service, though adds that Discovery HD now
'completes' the launch HD package, so we probably shouldn't expect any
more channel announcements until after the service is up and running.
