Just tried the spinning down the external firewire drives on the mac mini
... This works fine but you may find that spinning them up again when you
want to access them takes an unacceptably long time depending on how you
use
them.
I currently have - hmmm - 17 drives shared on the network using
sharepoints.
These are then mounted as network drives on a Linux machine and, using
something called "unionfs" on the Linux box, those 17 networked
drives are
merged into a single virtual drive so that all the movies appear in one
single folder on that machine. That folder is then shared on the network
and
I read the movies from there.
Hence, when I went to the folder tonight the Mac got it's requests from the
Linux box to give directory listings for all of those drives and so it span
up each drive in turn, read its catalogue, then moved on and started the
next drive spinning up, read its catalogue, moved on to the next drive ...
You get the idea?
Well, that whole operation took quite a while ... About 10 seconds for each
drive ... Which in isolation isn't bad but when it's 17 drives it's a bit
much! (However that is only when it has to spin them all up "from
cold"...)
