Hiya Keith,
I've been using AGV Free on the missus 'lappy' for a few months and not
had a problem with it - only updates once per day but its not on 24 7.
Never had any warnings saying that we had a virus (other than the test
eicar) so ok there I guess. :)

And just to add another flavour - I switched the other day to Avast.com
and am giving theirs a go - again they have a free for home use license
that you re-register for every year.

neither seem to be stressing anything on the pc. both so far seem to
have had no problems. The only reason for swapping was to give something
else a go.

Not sure how good they rate up against things like Nod32/ Sophos etc but
no grumbles due to crashes or 'its running slow'
