Yep, no problem. Everything on the switch in the study will be sharing a
single 10/100/1000Mbit/s link to the rest of the network though...

But this wouldn't be UKHA if someone didn't suggest that as you're
running one cable, why not run "N" cables?

A 16 port patch panel and some cable is cheaper and easier to hide/house
than a network switch, surely? :-)

Depends. Most modern switches essentially auto-negotiate the direction
for each pair being used on all ports, so x-over/non-x-over doesn't matter.
