External aerial for USB digital TV tuner

Just bought a cheap USB freeview tuner, and it works fine except that
the silly aerial it comes with doesn't pick up many channels.  I can
easily hook it up to an external aerial, but what sort of aerial do I
need? Presumably a straight stick kind of thing, rather than the
conventional analogue ladder arrangement?

Also the sound has a monster echo effect, and I can't find out why.  Any
ideas chaps?
