If you stripe the data across three disks and you lose one you lose
the lot.
Dynamic disks mean that you can strip drives together, you can't do that
with a "basic" disk until you convert it to dynamic, but you get
no
redundancy with that. It is just a software Raid 0 array. I always leave
disks as basic because under a hardware raid configuration going from say a
mirrored pair to a RAID 5 set where the available disk space increases I
can
then extend that volume under windows without a third party tool. Windows
though doesn't like to mess about with the primary C partition.
I wouldn't create a strip set unless I could recover everything with out
fail if I lost a disk. Even then I wouldn't fancy the ball ache of
rebuilding my PC.
Cheers
Jonathan

Subject: [ukha_d] [OT] Windows XP Dynamic Disks
Does anyone on here have any recommendations as to whether dynamic
disks are a good idea in WinXP?
I have a media server with 3x250Gb disks in it, and was considering
changing them to dynamic, so they appear as one drive
Are there any potential pitfalls with dynamic disks? I assume if one
fails it doesnt take the others with it..?
Thanks
Simon
