Simon,
Stand alone panels are available.
One thing to bear in mind is some of the signals you require from the
Engine, ie Over temperature and low oil pressure which are used to shut
down in case problem.

Nigel,
That is interesting. I would be interested in the longer term to do
something like that. Are the timer /switchover electronics available
off the shelf, or is it a hand crafted job?
