What is the physical manifestation of these "problems" within a
domestic
environment?

I assume the UPSs you are using are double conversion as if not then
there's
not a lot that they will be doing to your mains supply as - under normal
conditions - they will be sitting dormant and will only kick it when the
power sags or drops completely. I run a couple of UPSs here and the only
difference they make to me is that when we get our regular brief sags
(brownouts) or cuts (blackouts) then the PCs don't die.

In fact the UPS I have here itself actually *ADDS* to the mains noise in
the
house and hence is run from its own feed from my distribution board which
is
run through an FD10 just to take a notch out of the crud that it produces
so
that the X10 kit that I still use has a chance of continuing to work.

What exactly do you consider a "clean" socket? Are you sure you
don't just
mean UPS maintained? (Which is very different to "clean" which
would need to
come from a regenerated supply.)
