RE: Any Archos user here?

Well, I *very* nearly bought an AV700 about 2 weeks ago when I was
going th=
rough Dixons duty free at the airport, - the 100GB (non tuner) version
supp=
osedly had a fairly big price cut, but unfortunately the offer had expired
=
before I got to the till.. :-(

Rather glad I didn't now, - since I'd looked at the screens of the 700's
th=
e other week, and thought they were fine. However, when I compared
yesterda=
y, I was able to view a 500 & a 700 side-by-side, and oh, what a
difference=
.

The screen in the 500, although smaller, is far, far better. - sharper,
bri=
ghter, and noticeably superior. Unfortunately. I couldn't get a 100GB
versi=
on yesterday, so I settled for a 60GB. - I could have waited of course,
and=
ordered online, but I just didn't have the willpower. Besides, they still =
had a price cut on this one, so the 60GB set me back =A3329 - that's the
sa=
me price a lot of retailers are currently charging for the 30GB version
(ce=
rtainly Argos are...)

I've played with it a bit, - not been able to transfer films to it via PC
y=
et, - since I've got to figure out using the software to compress down and
=
convert to a suitable MPEG4 format. (doesn't support VOBs or ISOs of DVDs).

I have however tested recording from Sky via S-video, which seems fine.

I've opened it up & I can see that the disk is a *completely* standard
lapt=
op 2.5" IDE disk, so I wonder if there is potential for a bit of
hacking...=
- I don't know if the OS is on the disk or on Flash... (I do know the disk=
format is FAT32 though).

It comes with a copy of VirtualDub, and some other MPEG4 encoding
software,=
but I haven't' played with these yet.=20

More later.
