Sync'ing a laptop with a desktop

This is related to the dual monitor discussion a couple of weeks ago. 
We
bough the Matrox DualHead2Go, and it works a treat....the only problem

that the laptop has an Intel graphics chip set, which limits the max
resolution of the 2 screens to 2048 x 768, rather than the maximum res (and
native res of the monitors) of 2560 x 1024.

One way around this will be to buy a new laptop, but paying an extra =A3400
for a graphics chipset (NVidia GeForce 7400) that will barely be exploited
for anything other than driving the 2 screens seems a tad expensive, which
has led us to think about have a desktop drive the screens, staying in sync
with the laptop.

A quick Google turns up dozens of sync utilities, but none of them seem
particularly 'main-stream', and all are very ambiguous on what they keep in
sync, and how long it takes.  We'd need something that sync's the user
files, which is simple enough, and also the Outlook PST files, which
presumably is a bit more complicated, but easy enough.  The key is that it
needs to be slick, and not take 30 minutes at the start and end of day to
sync.  From a user point of view, it needs to be transparent as to which
device, the PC or laptop, is being used.

Any recommendations, or alternative suggestions?  I did think of a VNC type
solution, where the desktop is just the grunt to drive the screens, VNC'd
into the laptop, but the screen refresh would be too slow.

Aside from this minor issue, the Matrox widget is very good; no lag, and
good control of windows opening only in 1 screen, unless you stretch it
across both.
