I use Proteus and am very pleased with it. The starter kit is 150 quid
but
limited to 500 physical pins. You will find this fine for a while but
sometime will want more pins than that. For me crossing that bridge
happened to coincide with a reduced price offer to upgrade so I am now on
level 2 but have not paid the full upgrade price ones I don't think. Sadly
as an individual at home I am still classed as a commercial user so cannot
get the student prices.

I tried Eagle and failed to get on with it but each to his own. I hear it
is very good in its own right.

Eagle CAD - it's free for a version that does small PCBs.

Ludicrously expensive for bigger stuff though, but that's the case for
pretty much all of the PCB tools.
