Actually, to answer my own question, it might be that a mini-net of
'Minis + iSights + a small screen (if such a thing exists) would be the
thing ... 'wonder if pre-Intel ones are going cheap ... no, probably not
cheap-enough ...

Thinking more laterally, 'wonder if there's a way of using people's
mobile 'phones as video intercom devices within the house, without them
having to go onto the outside 'phone network ?
