The valve/actuator package is perfect for what you want to do. It
looks like
Myson use a M30 x 1.5mm connection which is becoming a sort of industry
standard. If this is the case then you can choose actuators from a number
of
manufacturers including Honeywell. The thermal actuators can take upto
minutes or more to open or close but this is rarely a problem in most
circumstances. Basic thermostatic control may get you to within +- 2
degrees
of your controlling setpoint. To increase control accuracy then you can use
time proportional control (varying the time on and off based on how far
from
setpoint the actual temp is) which could get this to within +-0.5 degrees.

Whatever you do make sure you flush through the system before fitting the
new TRV's, you'll be amazed at how much crud can build up inside the
pipework over time and this can easily block your new valves and either
make
them stick shut or prevent them from closing off.

Now for the advert..

If you don't want to run the wires and the budget is right then you could
also consider wireless control using Sensible Heat Hometronic. You would
not
be able to use your own controller but it does provide upto 16 heating
zones, radiator controller includes built in sensor so no additional
stat/sensor will be required and also provides independent optimum start.
It
can also interface to HV using relays to signal to a Hometronic input
module
for additional control - I have a customer in Inverness who does just this.

So if you want full control and interface options plus the fun of making it
all work yourself then go with your plan. If you want something that works
out of the box, that initially cost more but have no development time then
maybe consider Hometronic :-)

Wifey has opened the Ha budget box (even if she doesn't know it ;-)) and
asked for better control over our central heating. This is being driven by
the kids changing bedrooms and their tolerance to the warm and cold sides
of the house.

The central heating is already controlled by HV and essentially is on 24/7
with HV switching the thermostat and altering the setpoint temperature to
suit. Now, what is needed is radiator by radiator control where we can
still have the heating controlled as it is but be able to switch
individual radiators on and off using some sort of wall controller and
local temperature sensing.

This wall controller I hope to build so no worries there. What I need is
the favourite old radiator valve recommendation. David W posted this link
back in Feb 04 which a friend was using
<http://www.myson.ie/pages/trv3.html>
I will try and chase this down over
the next week or so and get prices and availability etc.

Does anyone have any new discoveries to share on motorised valves for
radiators?

Thanks

Ian
