I was thinking more of an Apple made device not that hideous licensed
iTunes phone from Motorola.

Personally I think Apple have done a fairly decent job with the UI on
the iPod.

DRM is a different matter, I'd like to see it gone too.

I use my iPod without being affected by DRM - you don't have to buy
music from the iTunes store, and unlike some other players the iPod will
play non DRM files happily.
Actually OS X doesn't have any copy protection or registration which is
one of my pet hates with the Microsoft stuff.
DRM only ever seems to really affect legitimate users  :(

You mean like the "iMoto" Motorola ROKR phone with iTunes?

It stank.

And then, it slipped below the waves never to be seen again...

Let's be honest here - if Crapple produced a smart phone, it would be
infected with DRM to the hilt, charge you for every single thing it did
and
have so many restrictions on how you could use it that it would be
pointless.

The company are just too much into control freakery to produce a good
generic device.

The ROKR is a perfect example - they placed ridiculous restrictions on
the
device (like not allowing iTunes to be downloaded over GPRS or GSM - you
could only do it when docked!) and crippled it (it could only store a
hundred tracks, despite having more storage, so that it didn't
cannibalise
iPod sales).

I don't see Apple producing a useful general device.
