I didn't.  I simply connected across the doorbell's speaker, and
smoothed the audio signal to drive a transistor.  There wasn't much of
an option, as the whole thing was on a single chip with connections for
battery, speaker and a coil antenna.  Fine for a single doorbell, but if
you had multiple buttons, you'd need a bell for each one.

If you want to get at the codes, you're either going to need to hack a
less integrated doorbell (for reference, mine was a cheapo B&Q one), or
find some sort of general-purpose 433MHz(?) receiver...
