Nice work!! I'd seen it on the AV forums and it had good information
so
thanks for jogging my memory...

This is a DIY job. Feels like I am paying for my sins all in one go... ;)

1) They are heavy weight bolts, it is just the type of block
(thermalite/aerated) that is making me double the amount I was thinking of
using. That way each bolt is only putting half the weight through the
block
at each location and so the block is less likely to let go / crumble.

2) Alarm cable sounds good. I'd heard this mentioned before and will
probably run double just in case. I will be cutting a hole behind the
plasma to run cables to node zero so would prefer a wired solution. The
xantech kit looks good, especially the 490-95Kit
http://www.letsautomate.com/12133.cfm
. Would I be right in thinking that I
could install the receiver under the telly and it would then route the IR
to
node zero? It's just that the documentation I have read about it suggests
that it is the other way (controlling stuff in N0 from other stuff in
there). Does anyone have any other recommendations for a discreet IR
distribution?

3) Sorry - should have explained better... The cables I am thinking of
running from the plasma to node zero include 2x scart leads, 12x phono, 2x
RJ45, 1x S-Video, 1x DVI, 1x VGA, 1x Audio, and now 2x alarm cable. I was
just wondering if there are any regulations that cover running these types
of cables as I wanted to run them from the telly, up the wall into the
floor
space above and then down another wall. This total run would be about 8m.
Is this too long for any of these cables?? I would also like to run the
power to the plasma from N0. I know not to run it side by side so will be
installing a second conduit - does this sound reasonable?

Thanks,
Pedro

Pedro,

You can check out my install guide (pictures at each stage) here :

To answer your questions :

1) Each Anchor Bolt should have a weight rating associated with it.
It all depends on the plamsa mount you're using and if there are
specific fixtures recommended to be used. If your local B&Q / Wickes
type ones are categorised as 'Heavy Weight' you'll be fine.

2) For IR distribution, you can use standard alarm cable for
distribution. Are you in a position to hide the cabling ? If not, you
may need to consider a wireless solution. The Harmony 895 comes with
it's own RF receiver and 4 double IR emitters which can connected to
your Node 0 components. If you want to hard wire the IR, you can use
kit like Niles or Xantech and 'splice' the cables to extend the
lengths. Take a look at reomtecentral.com custom installers threads
to get some ideas.

3) Is the Plasma cable a single proprietry between the plasma and a
TV Receiver box ? (As with the 6th generation Pioneer's for
example ?). Or are you talking about every possible iput having a
long cable between the plasma and Node 0? If it's the first case, you
may need to consider a CAT5 or optical extender. There's a good
article about it here : http://tinyurl. <http://tinyurl.com/g4rww.>
com/g4rww. As for how best to
channel, just go by what is consdiered 'regulation friendly'. Pop
into a specialist electricians place (e.g. TLC direct) and get advice
from them. I went for a non regulation friendly diagonal line for my
Plasma cable, because I wanted to keep the signal length as short as
possible.

Is this a DIY job or are you getting someone in to do it ?

Best of luck with it. I went through hell and back with my cabling
chaos. You'll get people trying to demotivate you by saying 'you did
all that just for a flatscreen ?' but trust me - it's worth it when
you see their jaws drop.

Cheers
