To increase the IR output. By putting them in series the current will be
less.
3 LEDs in series driven at 100mA = 100mA
3 LEDs in parallel driven at 100mA each = 300mA
You need a higher drive voltage with series LEDs but older remote controls
tended to have 4 batteries giving a 6V supply whereas modern remotes tend
to
have only a 3v supply.
Efficiency of both IR emitters and IR receivers has also improved over the
years.
