Over here in NZ, telecom have abandoned the master and secondary
sockets
because it was stuffing up too many adsl installations by unbalancing the
circuit, the ringer wire couples in and out via the capacitor all too well.
The interum ones have a capacitor in each socket, but the new ones will be
leaving that out as telecom havn't permited any phones that needed the 3rd
wire for about 10 years now, the idea being that people attached to their
old phones will have to buy a ringer adaptor.
A contractor I know spent most of his time going to peoples houses and
swapping out all the sockets to solve faults.
So in essence, master and ringer wire before the adsl filter, is bad, after
is ok.

(The PTSN line would need to go into a master socket though.)?
