RE: Speakers that sound like Bose?

Speaking as an anal hifi purist, I don't rate Bose; their speakers nor
the rest of their gear. But I accept that people have differing tastes and
requirements. I do see the attractiveness of their small av solutions -
speakers that neatly fit onto the corner of rooms, etc.

It's not speaking to AV dealers he wants to do; he needs to listen to gear;
sound is a very personal thing. The sound of the Bose speakers may also be
coloured by the amp driving them; sticking a different amp behind them may
make them sound completely different, as will sticking other speakers on
existing gear; it's a complex equation. There really is no better way than
to listen, in a quiet room, to stuff you are familiar with. He may listen
to some cheap speakers and finds he much prefers the sound of them over
some expensive ones. Listening to a wide range (or even just the extremes)
will make it easier to chose.

For many people a set of decent speakers are too big/intrusive, especially
if building a 5.1 solution. Personally I've sacrificed to get the best (for
me), but it's a stereo solution; 5.1 just doesn't fit into my living space
(and this is more to do with location of doors than amount of space).

Linn, B&W, Kef - all excellent. Castle are also good - I had a pair of
those for many years until I upgraded.

And don't dismiss speaker stands and/or cable. It's not necessary to go to
extremes with these, but don't go for the cheapest option; like wine in a
restaurant, the cheapest is often stuff they are trying to get rid of.
