Yes, they are quite nice but at $49 each about the same price as the
Modtronix
SBC. Using the XPort usually requires another processor, PCB, etc. It
also has
some mounting requirements for heatsinking.

It all comes down to intended purpose. If you are driving an existing
serial device,
such as a serial VFD or a  piece of audio/video gear, then a MSS100 or
XPort
is ideal. If you are starting from scratch then an SBC such as the
Modtronix
or the Rabbit is usually more cost effective.

To answer the last point, almost all 20x4 LCD's are 4bit or 8bit
parallel and therefore
require an interface to serial (TTL or RS-232).
