You might try looking at http://www.hamachi.cc/ who arbitrate the
connection of computers behind firewalls.

You have to rely on them as a service to get connected, but the
connection is then point to point. I tested it with a dmz and a couple
of subnets and computers in the normally mutually inaccessible subnets
were connected using Hamachi without changing the firewall rules on any
of the three routers or any routing tables. After the edge router was
disconnected from the internet, the VPN continued to work, implying a
point to point connection and not through a Hamachi agent. Once
disconnected, however, the VPN couldn't be re-established without
reconnecting to the internet.

This may help you establish a VPN back to base without having to worry
about your clients' firewalls. I don't think, though, it is guaranteed
to work through all firewalls.
