Minor nitpick, but GU10 globes are actually an MR16, as the MR means
metalized reflector, and the 16 is the diameter in 1/8ths of an inch.
The base on the 12v ones is usually a GU5.3, but there is another size used
as well which is why one of the pin holes on most downlights is elongated.
I would still never use line voltage halogens anywhere I care about light
quality, distribution or not blowing up any control gear. They are great to
put in a house that you are doing up because people don't know the
difference and think they are all the same.

Do you mean capsule, GU10 or MR16 halogen bulbs? You can find CFL and
LEDs for all these bar capsule
