RE: Re: Christmas gadgets

I'm living over in the US at the moment, and have a DirectTV PVR; it's crap
compared to a TiVo, despite it being advertised as "better that
TiVo"
according to some CNet survey. I think when 'item X' becomes so good that
everything is compared to it, and claims to be better, then 'item X' is
probably still the best there is (iPod, TiVo, Sonos being great examples).

If I end up living here permanently, I' will be getting a TiVo, if only to
torment all of you :-) I played with one in Costco the other day, and it's
barely changed from the last UK version (series 2??), same sound effects,
same brilliant UI, with just a few minor updates.

As an aside, I'm liking Slingbox...my uplink speed in the UK is 256 at
best,
but it's still watchable, it just becomes painful when I forward thru
adverts, so lose the buffer that had built up.

Yeah, if you set out to deliberately make the UI awful could you do a
better
job than Sky have done? It's bloody awful.

I can only assume that TiVo and others have many patents that have meant
Sky+ had to do it another way?

Although if that is the case, why didn't Sky just license TiVo's
technology.
