ESD matting

This is a bit of a question for the beardy electronics engineers out
there... :-)

In order to prevent ESD on a desk or workbench, RS and all the usual
suppliers sell very expensive ESD matting by the roll (=A3560 per 18m
roll)=
.
My question, in an effort to be practical and to save costs, is could I not
just use a rubber pond liner such as these:

The matting would be spray-mounted to a formica top anyway, so thickness
isn't really a problem.=20

Thoughts?
