Ah - hang on a minute...
Looks like you can install a fresh copy of Vista - you just have to run the
DVD installation from an existing copy of XP rather than booting from the
DVD like I first tried (too used to XP installs!).
After entering the product key, it asks if you want to do an upgrade or new
install. If it's a new install and you select a partition with an existing
copy of XP on, it copies the WINDOWS dir to WINDOWS.OLD but you can't boot
to that installation.
