Re: Synology NAS
Jim,
I've been using the Synology DS-101g+ for over 18 months.
I have it hacked to include support for Squeezebox via a Perlbased
Slimserver (Google 'SSODS')
It works well, but what I would say is back up. I was using it with
a faulty SATA disk (not known at the time) and once it crashed the
data was irrecoverable.
The Synology series come with an XP / Vista (and p'aps MAC) based
application to 'seek' it on the network before you set it up with IP
details. Whenever it bombs out you must use this utility to find it
again, however this app also wipes the volume if it is corrupt.
I've got over this hurdle using my own back up mechanism (telnet and
rsync to an eSATA drive). With a stable SATA disk now I've not had
any problems, but all I'd say is back up as often as you can.
Despite my earlier problems, I love it. It works well and can be
left on 24-7 because it supports disk spin down.
I am considering the RS-407 in the future.
