Oh, you *can* - you can also install 3D graphics cards too.
But why would you?
The kernel offers mainline support for almost all decent server hardware.

And just below you talk about selecting 'half decent kit' and running
'signed'
drivers... Same thing. Adaptec is only 'half decent' if it has good
drivers.
Under Linux it can fail to qualify. Highpoint probably fails for *both*
OSes due
to the drivers, not the hardware...
In fact I'd guess most 'B-grade' hardware is actually B-grade drivers.
