Do you mean you want to detect if the window/door is open/closed?

If so I have used magnetic reed switches in windows and external doors,
same
as internal.

I chose a device from rapid electronics that was as short as possible and
confirmed with the window people there was enough room in the frame for the
magnet before getting to the sealed unit.

This only gives open/closed rather than ajar/wide open and doesn't say
whether the window/door is locked or just pulled to, but it is fairly
simple
and easy.
