Dean,

The 360 will only upscale a standard DVD if you use the VGA output.  It
will then output at whatever resolution you have chosen.  Component will
only give 480p/576p.  The HD DVD drive is only a drive, with the 360
processing the data.
If you need HDMI the 360 Elite is out this summer.

I'm considering getting an HD DVD drive for my 360 - since playing in HD i
like the idea of a few movies like that..

Was wondering if anyone knew whether it will upscale a standard DVD like
many of the DVD players now about ?

I've had a punt around Google but most people just seem to be using
microsofts xbox site text in their adverts which doesnt give much away
