Surround speakers should be higher than ear level - just as in a
commercial cinema - to create diffused, and spatial effects, rather than

The typical set up you see in manufacturers=92 brochures with a speaker on
a stand either end of the sofa is about the worst layout you can get for
creating an ambient, three dimensional sound, as your ears pinpoint
exactly where the sound is coming from.

Ceiling speakers can work well for surround duties, especially dipole
models which are made specifically for the job. Obviously the quality
and power handling are important, as you=92ve mentioned.

They're pretty small, only rated at 3-15w. Plus I thought the normal
mounting position for surround speakers (apart from the sub) should be
at
'ear level', so I'm not sure that putting everything into the ceiling
would
sound right, the audio sweet-spot would be floating above your head
somewhere. I know these are directional, but the lack of power would
indicated they're not suitable for an a/v set up, particularly in a
large
room.

Then again, I'm no expert either.
