Re: Z-Wave - the future?

" A USB or serial controller that has an open API that will allow
the
implementation of Open Source software to drive it. (No NDAs or
requirement to use a proprietary SDK)."

Seconded!!!

For me, basics:

A PC Interface (USB/Serial/Ethernet)
Plug In Dimmers & Appliance Modules
BackBox dimmers & appliance modules (hide behind a standard light
switch)
replacement (all-in-one) switch faceplates - momentary and latching, for
dimmers and on off control
small hand held remote control - similar to X10 KR22
stick-a-switch - similar to X10 SS13

"nice to have"
Motion Sensor
Thermometer (not necesarillly a thermostat - simply reporting temp would be
sufficient, actions can be dealt with by other devices/components/logic)
Light level sensor
moisture sensor
smoke detector

"Would be great if properly implemented, but properly to niche to
appeal"
retrofit window actuators! (I'm fed up if the several failed DIY
approaches)
- this, actually, doesn't have to be Z-Wave - if anyone knows of anything
inexpensive that can open & close a small window - I'd like to hear
from
you! - - biggest problem is it HAS to be retro fit - no cutting into window
frame - as it's a listed building :(
