That's a vital aspect of any HA system, IMO. If my PC crashes, or
needs repairs or an upgrade, I don't want the lights to go out in the
meantime.
My ideal is for switches to talk directly to lights etc, with the
computer as an additional layer of control on top.

Can you use normal switches, or do they have to be the push-to-make non-
latching efforts used with X10 etc?
