RE: Replacement NAS required
I'm a fan of the Synology units, having a DS207 that has done the job
faultlessly.
They have Gigabit as standard (very useful for backups!) and support
USB-attached devices as well as plenty of software-related options.
Units come bare, add whatever drives needed.

Subject: [ukha_d] Replacement NAS required
My old Buffalo Linkstation is on it's last legs - disk makes a horrible
whining noise (bearing failing?) and the fan has packed up. As it is quite
low capacity by todays standards I've decided to replace rather than mess
around repairing it, will wipe the disk and sell it on for spares/repair.
As it has done god service I was going to replace it with a Linkstation Pro
but before I do are there any other units I should be looking at? I use the
unit mainly for storing ripped music (about 200 gigs worth) and also as a
central back up for our laptops. Ideally I want gigabit lan (fast Ethernet
would be fine but I'm migrating to gigabit), 500 gig disk or greater,
support for windows shares so it will work with Sonos, USB connectivity for
additional external drive (scheduled back up to USB would be a bonus). Any
views on other kit I could should consider?
