this came through my email box - might suit someone.


The University of Portsmouth is offering 2 PhD bursaries in the area of
Assistive Computing/Assisted Living.

One is to do work in the broad area of the application of mobile and
wirele=
ss
technologies to telecare/assisted living. The other is to do work in the
application of intelligent systems to healthcare.

Applications are invited from well-qualified graduates to undertake
researc=
h
leading to a PhD degree. Those holding degrees from British universities
sh=
ould
normally have at least an upper second class honours degree (a lower second
class honours degree plus a Masters degree is also acceptable).

The accepted candidate will register on a full-time basis starting in
Octob=
er
2009 and will work in a team spanning the School of Computing and the
Depar=
tment
of Electronic and Computer Engineering.

The bursary comprises an annual maintenance grant which for 2009-2010 will
=
be
=A313,290, together with full payment by the University of its UK/EU
studen=
t
tuition fees.

Candidates must make a pre-application by uploading their details online at
http://userweb.port.ac.uk/~socres/rsapps/.
The project outline should norma=
lly
be about 1000 words in length and include the topic area to be researched,
=
an
indication of the innovative aspect of the research, such as how the topic
=
will
break new ground, and the intended research methodology. Note that
applicat=
ions
by post or email will not be accepted.

The deadline for applications is 4th September 2009. Selected applicants
wi=
ll be
asked to supply more information, including the names of two referees.
They=
will
be invited to come for interview in Portsmouth in early September and to
gi=
ve a
short presentation on their proposed projects.
