You shouldn't need to use the menu, unless you are changing settings, etc.

Its a simple 2 step process to record or play (similar to TiVo):

To record press 'guide' button, move (or search) to the program you want to
record then press 'OK'

To watch a recording, press 'play list' button, select program you want to
watch press 'OK'

Im not sure they could have made it any simpler for basic play and record
operations?
