or does the cable router act as the gateway./ The Netgear router has some
smart setup feature - would it be likely that this would get all the infor
from teh STB or would some manual stuff be require.

I was passing on Friday evening and was told it wasn't convenient for me to
drop by to fit it - now I'm stuck trying to sort it from 150 miles away.

Ok, some confusion here. If it's a STB (not a stand-alone cable modem),
they will need to register the new mac address with VM. Can't remember if
all sites get redirect to registration site, or if you need to browse - VM
site will say no doubt.
To register you'll also need the customer PIN, assuming they've forgotten,
it'll be a contact centre call....
If it's a CM, you just need to power cycle the CM - they are configured to
only bridge one mac address onto the network.
...if it's annoying you, get them to sign up for Digital Home Support, the
new service from VM than aims (sorta) to save us techies a few evenings
round friends/relatives :-)
