I am using a cheap tablet for this too and I was using the USB port to
keep=
it powered but it would not keep charge as you discovered. This was put do=
wn to the max 500mA draw from the USB as this tablet doesn't appear to
chan=
ge the current based on there being any actual USB activity or not.

It has a DC socket for 5V and using this I can keep it running on external
=
power with no battery draw.

The issue with it for me is that is keeps dropping out the WiFi connection
=
even though I have the settings set for keep alive in sleep. I have to
shut=
down Homeseer touch and restart it each time. Not ideal.

I am going to grab the Homeseer device when it is on discount again as it
h=
as been designed for permanently on. This can be done with Android as I
hav=
e a commercial system I designed that does the same and the screen goes to
=
sleep and touching it brings it back on. (it's just not cheap enough to
use=
at home as the LCD alone is $149)

In your case it sounds like the charging rate is fixed if the charging
sock=
et is USB. Some tablets such as the likes of Samsung change the charge
rate=
based on it detecting USB connection. With no connection, it assumes you =
are using the wall charger and bumps up the charge rate. Cheaper tablets
do=
n't seem to do that.

Has anyone on the group run a tablet on permanent display for an ha
applica=
tion?
I bought a 7 inch Asus Android tab to wall mount to display data from a
box=
I am beta testing.
Problem is with supplied charger the rate of battery depletion outstrips
th=
e charger. Also tried a generic usb charger that copes with charging an
iPa=
d (so not short of milliamps) and same result.
I am guessing the charge rate is managed by the Asus device.
Trouble is choice is steps up to 30 minutes before sleep or never sleep.
No=
thing in between.
Bit of a pain having to use 30 minutes and keep waking it!
Any ideas?
