Ah, what you need to do is deselect the current item in the list. If
you click anywhere in white space outside the column area to the
right, or below the last item, it'll start tracking latests messages.

There's a bit of a compromise between examining an area (pausing the
scrolling effectively) by selecting a message, and deselecting to
resume auto-scrolling.

I've thought about trying a 'last message is visible, therefore carry
on scrolling' scheme but not actually done it yet.

That's on the list for the next version. You're not the only one to
request that. The more votes it gets, the higher up it goes :)
