Off the top of my head I can't recall what the commands are for
determining display level or transport power status. It certainly
should be possible to determine player state/configuration and react
accordingly.

I'll have a delve later in the week as it's a bit late now.

I need to determine if its in double or single height mode too, as
that affects how the display message should be formatted before
sending to the Slim.

I use my Slim as a clock with the lowest brightness setting so I've
not encountered your off problem before.
