Re: xAP & SQL
Hi Neil,
Welcome - I will send you offlist an interim update to xAPTel too -
and I must post the update on mi4 too I guess. Very minor and mainly
addresses issues with dual line handling. I am intending the next
release will correctly support some modems too (rather than just
Meteor's etc) .

Yep, xAP Desktop is really what xAP is all about - the realtime
interaction with you and your home. Out of the box it offers the most
common needs but it's real power comes when you spend a little time
finding out how it all works and rolling your own Desktop displays and
controls.

address for every call?

James and I have long had discussions about 'could it do this' and I
think we've both come to the conclusion that trying to restrict the
'application' to tasks that it should naturally do based on its prime
function is probably the right approach , particularly as so many people
need slightly different things, eg perhaps the content of the email in
this case. Otherwise applications suffer feature bloat and become very
complex to maintain. In a way this is why xAPTel and xAP Switchboard
are separate bits.
The good news is that within Switchboard James has created a very
flexible 'send any xAP message when an event happens' so you can send
xAP messages when an incoming call arrives, is answered or ends, when an
outgoing call starts/dials a digit , ends or when an "Instant
Messenger"
event happens eg with xAPTel a contact appearing online etc ( Skype VOIP
calls are also evented this way). This is exactly what you need !
Sooo.... what you could do already is generate a xAP message within xAP
Switchboard that will send a command message to a suitable xAP email
application that then sends an email. I dont' think you will have to
'script' anything . The body of the message can be formed within xAP
Switchboard to contain all the detail you wish including the text,
number, STD, Area, Name etc etc... so ... jobs a goodun I think.
NB I would have to check that we actually have such a xAP application
to send an email via a xAP schema - I had originally thought Stuarts,
xAP Mail Monitor did but in just skimming the docs maybe it doesn't ,
and I thought James and Patrick each had one too although maybe that was
SMS.....- does anyone have such an application ???
James does have an Outlook conduit already in place with xAP Switchboard
- but again I don't think that has a mail send schema although it fits
nicely with what you are trying to do. Having a 'send an email'
resource sitting on your network somewhere is obviously useful to many
different xAP applications but perhaps raises some issues on security
and validation that may have to be addressed.

access db, however i do fully intend to allow you to pick an odbc driver in
future releases. I certainly want to be able to log to a mysql db at home
and using odbc would allow the use of any db so it's probably the best way
to go.
