Ultimately I think that it would only need to be a pretty dumb smtp server
as all it really would need to do is receive the email message, break it
down into parts (from, to, body, etc) and act on the body section. Maybe
there would need to be some form of access control i.e. only accept
messages
from / to certain addresses and junk the rest.

I'd thought of some form of IM bot too, or some other form of remote
command
interface, but I figured that smtp would be more accessible and not require
any additional software. The simpleness of being able to send an email
from
my phone to "xapcmd@xxxxxxx" with some sort of command in the
message body that would switch on my lights etc appeals a lot!
Talking of IM, I do have a pretty cool idea for a xAP IM application, but
I'll save that for another day as at the moment it's more of a late night
beer induced haze than a solid outline :)
