oh OK, I was hoping that if I had messenger running on the server, I could
specify a contact to send the call details to as a chat.... or indeed other
xAP OSD messages?
what's the possibility of this "feature"?

Ahh no - it sends xAP OSD messages when someone changes state in your
instant messenger client eg "Away > Online". There is a page
in
Switchboard that shows the realtime status of your IM contacts,
including when they were last online. Currently only Skype is supported
